FOUND: 7,000 Easter eggs in Bayou Gauche
By Heather R. Breaux - Apr 05, 2007
Thick gray clouds and a serious chance of rain didn't stop dozens of children of all ages from crowding fields near the Bayou Gauche Fire Station to hunt for 7,600 plastic eggs stuffed with yummy candy a full week before Easter Sunday.
And folks at the Life Fellowship Community Church in Des Allemands didn't hesitate to declare this year's "Jam-tastic Easter Egg Hunt and Family Fun Day" a hands-down winner.
There were lots of fun-filled activities to go along with the egg hunt, things like face painting, inflatable "space walks" and bean-bag tossing.
Some deft and talented volunteers with strong lungs even made animal balloons for squealing children and those young-at-heart adults - like this reporter! - who just couldn't resist asking for one, too.
But two events that shined brightest amongst all the others were the puppet shows and sing-a-longs led by the church's children's pastor, Bridgette Domengeaux.
"I really like how the church incorporated different activites to make the Easter-egg hunt exciting," said Lillian Smith, while bystanders smiled and nodded in agreement.
"I especially liked the way the puppet show explained to the kids the
meaning behind Easter,Ē continued the woman from Norco.
"I thought that it was a very creative way to get the kids' attention and inform them on why we celebrate the holiday."
The egg hunt was divided into three age categories.
And the child with the most eggs from his or her category won one of three top prizes: a $50 gift card to Toys R Us.
"We had about 350 in attendance and the children had a great time," said Domengeaux.
"Our purpose for this event is to bless the families of St. Charles Parish and to share Godís love.
ďJesusí resurrection is the reason we do what we do,Ē she said.
