Recycling not quite back up to snuff
By Staff Report - Feb 08, 2007
Curbside recycling that was “blown away” and forgotten after Hurricane Katrina isn’t coming back anytime soon, say officials - because there’s nowhere to take the bottles, aluminium cans, plastics and newspapers.
"You can get somebody to take the stuff, but nobody's buying it, so you can't use that revenue to offset the cost of collection," Mark Fridge, district manager for Coastal Waste, St. Charles Parish's garbage contractor, said in a published report.
Before the storm, Allied Waste was the recycling contractor for St. Charles Parish. But its facility shut down because parishes it served haven't resumed recycling programs, the report said.
