Destrehan Lady Wildcats clinched their first win in a bi-district play-off game on last Thursday against Covington. They defeated them with a score of 78-54. However, part two of this journey wasn't so easy when they faced their second opponent on Monday of this week. This game was high-energy for both teams. In the last seconds of this game, the Lady Wildcats managed to squeeze by with a win beating Ellender by one point 44-43.

Senior Candice McGee was instrumental in both games. In the game against Covington, she happened to be the highest scorer with a total of 24 points. In her game against Ellender, she led the team with over 22 rebounds. In our game against Covington, "we were able to keep our momentum," said Coach Frontha. "We made some mistakes offensively early in the game." At the halftime, the Wildcats took a lead of 14 points ending with a 37-23 score. By the third quarter, the Covington Lions cut the lead by four. "What's going on?" McGee said, "We need to slow the ball down." "We talked about it, then regrouped"

When Tawanna Lee, who scored 19 points, got back into the Convington game after getting into foul trouble, the Lady Wildcats refocused and outscored the Lions in the fourth quarter. Twins, Shanna and Shunna Richard both scored in double figures, Shanna with 19 points and Shunna with 15 points. Shamayne Moses who was tremendous under the goal brought six more points for the Wildcats.

"We have worked too hard to come this far and lose," said Lee. Both McGee and Lee agreed, "this game is behind us, we must get ready for the next one." "We are taking, one game at a time," said McGee.

Monday night brought a brand new game. "Ellender is a good ball club, whenever, we play them they come to play and they do it well," said Frontha. "Ellender kept switching presses, and good teams will do that." "We just need to identify what going on quicker on the court before it's too late."

Both teams had difficulty making lay-ups and holding on to the ball. In the fourth quarter, the ball was turned over 6 times in less than a minute-resembling something of a tennis match.

Destrehan outscored Ellender on free throws. In fact it was Tawanna's last two free throw shots that put Destrehan in the position to win. In the last seconds of the game, Moses relentless defense was able to draw a foul, giving the ball to Destrehan with 2.8 secs left in the game. Destrehan will meet the Hahnville Lady Tigers on Thursday night at Hahnville High School.
