Destrehan falls short of state championship appearance in semi-final loss to Acadiana
Kyle Barnett - Dec 05, 2013
The Destrehan Wildcats' hopes for another state championship were dashed when they fell to the Acadiana Rams in the semi-final round of the playoffs.
The seemingly unstoppable No. 4 Destrehan, who racked up 12 lopsided victories and only loss on a forfeit before entering the game, ended their season by being handily defeated by No. 1 Acadiana in Lafayette.
Destrehan suffered a blow early on when quarterback Donovan Isom went down hard with an injury eight minutes to go in the first quarter and exited the game for the rest of the first half. Despite losing Isom, the Wildcats went on to score on the drive off a 24-yard run by tailback Will Matthews. However, that would be the only points Destrehan put up on the night as the Wildcats' offense struggled for the remainder of the game.
After Matthews’ touchdown run, Acadiana struck back when tailback Edward Cormier scored on a run from three yards out. But the Wildcats were able to hold onto a 7-6 lead after blocking the point after attempt.
With four minutes left in the half Acadiana took control of the game for good with a go-ahead touchdown off a 17-yard pass from quarterback De’Edward Cormier and Destrehan entered halftime with trailing 13-7.
Although Isom reentered the game in the second half, Destrehan’s offense continued to sputter and Acadiana pulled away.
First the Rams scored on a 64-yard touchdown run by tailback Donovan Solomon that was followed up by two point conversion to make the score 21-7. Then De’Edward Cormier peeled off a 35-yard rushing touchdown increase their lead 28-7 to end the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter the Rams dragged out a 15-play drive that they capped with the final touchdown of the night to make the score 35-7.
With nearly five minutes left in the game, Destrehan was again unable to score as their season came to an end.
