Zachary avenges last year’s second round playoff loss, ends Hahnville’s season
By Kyle Barnett - May 02, 2013
The Zachary Broncos turned the table on the Hahnville Tigers by beating them at home in the second round of the playoffs to avenge their playoff loss to HHS in the second round at home last year.
Hahnville came out to an early 2-0 lead, but Tigers pitcher Tyler Lamers struggled and was taken out in favor of Brooks Vial after 3 1/3 innings and giving up four runs on three hits. Lamers also hit two batters and committed a costly balk that brought in a runner.
Things were not much better for Vial who came in with the Tigers behind in the game 4-2. He gave up three runs on three hits while closing out the game in the 7-4 loss.
Broncos ace Evan Tidwell came into the game with a career record of 30-4 and increased it to 31-4, even after giving up four runs off of eight hits in six innings.
The Tigers rallied late when Cliburn loaded the bases twice in the sixth inning and allowed runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but Hahnville was not able to capitalize off of having batters on base and closed out the final three innings with runners in scoring position.
Sidearm pitcher Travis Cliburn came in to perform cleanup duties and finished the last inning after giving up two hits, but no runs.
David Baudry, Hahnville head coach, said his team made too many mistakes and did not get big plays when the needed them.
“I think they came in and we knew they were going to put pressure on us and I think the pressure got to us a little bit,” he said. “We didn’t make good pitches and we didn’t make good plays. Offensively we did a great job, but we needed that one double.”
Baudry praised Zachary's performance and said the Tigers showed their resilience by putting themselves in position to pull out the win in the end.
“They are fabulous, they are a great program and so are we. I was pleased with the way we competed,” he said. “I thought that take away a misplay here and not getting a big hit there, we are going to have a chance to win the game.”
