LSU signee, DHS teammates reportedly attack police officer

DHS football star and LSU signee Rickey Jefferson was arrested for allegedly striking an undercover Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy during Mardi Gras festivities in early February.

According to narcotics officer Det. Joshua Collins, the incident began on Feb. 2 at 8:30 p.m. following the Krewe of Caesar parade in Metairie. Destrehan senior football player David Sampson reportedly approached Collins while he was making an arrest near Lakeside Mall and refused to back up when Collins ordered him to do so.

After Sampson allegedly shouted obscenities at him, Collins tried to arrest him. According to Collins, Sampson swung at him and the two began fighting in the parade route. At that point, Collins says that Jefferson and Joe Sharp, a DHS senior who played defensive line for the Wildcats, started to attack him as well.

Collins says that Sampson escaped but that he was able to tackle him after a lengthy chase through the parade route. As he was running, witnesses allegedly told Collins that Sampson threw a gun, but one was never recovered by officers.

Sampson is an honor’s student at Destrehan who was nominated for the school’s student of the year. He is also a member of the National Honor’s Society and received the U.S. Marine Corps Scholar Athlete award. He played safety for the Wildcats last season and received first team all-district honors.

Sampson, Jefferson and Sharp have all been charged with resisting an officer by violence. They were originally charged with battery on a police officer and interfering with a police investigation.

Jefferson and Sharp were arrested by street crimes Det. Henry L. Conravey III during the incident.

Jefferson signed his letter of intent to play football for LSU only four days after the incident.
