10 parish athletes sign college scholarships

St. Charles Parish was well represented on National Signing Day last Wednesday, with 10 local students inking scholarships to continue their athletic careers in college.

Eight students from Hahnville, including five football players, made their college decisions. Tiger running back Sergio Medina signed with Tulane, while quarterback Easton Melancon will continue his football career at Louisiana College. Offensive lineman James Diggs signed with College of the Canyon, while full back/tight end Cody Morales will play at Nicholls State University. Defensive end Juvon Gales will continue his football career in Texas after signing with Stephen F. Austin University.

Two Hahnville girls’ soccer players also made their college decisions on Wednesday, with Kristal Breaux signing with the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and Grayson Touchard signing with William Carey University.

Hahnville softball player Pepper Baker, who has just begun her senior season, signed with East Mississippi Junior College.

Destrehan High School had one athlete sign an athletic scholarship, but it was a big one. Rickey Jefferson, the brother of former LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson, will continue his brother’s legacy after signing with the Tigers on Wednesday.

St. Rose native and St. Charles Catholic standout defensive lineman Taylor Cochran will also play football at the next level after signing with Southeastern Louisiana University.

Pictures of each player and their families can be seen in the Feb. 14 edition of the St. Charles Herald-Guide.
