Houma actress nominated for Academy Award
Allen Lottinger - Jan 17, 2013
One of our native daughters has been nominated for best actress in a leading role in this year’s Academy Awards. Six-year-old Quvenzhane Wallis got the honor for her performance in "Beasts of the Southern Wild," a candidate for best picture of the year, which was filmed in southern Louisiana. And she is a resident of Houma.
Wallis is the youngest Oscar nominee ever. She has already won the Critics’ Choice Movie Award in Los Angeles. She told the audience there that "I would like to thank God for all my blessings." And if she wins the Academy Award, she undoubtedly will become a worldwide sensation.
It is wonderful for young newcomers who have no background in the field to be honored for such a grand award. To be so young and to have won such an honor and to be nominated for another certainly sets her out on a plateau by herself.
Whether "Beasts of the Southern Wild" wins best picture or she wins the best actress trophy should not reduce the honor and glory she and the movie have achieved. It obviously is a great movie and our loyal citizens of south Louisiana should go and see it.
The movie is now available for rent and purchase.
