Destrehan stops two-game skid with 52-45 victory
Jonathan Menard - Dec 06, 2012
The Destrehan boys basketball team halted a two-game skid by beating Central Lafourche 52-45 on Friday.
The win improved the Wildcats to 4-6 on the season, but head coach Todd Bourg wasnít too impressed with his squadís performance in the victory.
"We played poorly and we shot the ball very poorly," Bourg said. "We hustled and gave it all we had, but we just didnít shoot the ball well and we did not execute offensively."
The lone bright spot for the Wildcats was the play of Gary Johnson, who led all scorers with 24 points.
The Wildcats have struggled early this season mainly due to inexperience. Bourg lost eight seniors to graduation and only returned two players who saw time last season.
So far this season, the Wildcats have beaten Parkview Baptist, Catholic, South Terrebonne and Central Lafourche while losing to Christian Life (34-30), Chalmette (66-57), Amite (56-52), H.L. Bourgeois (70-53) and Slidell (35-30).
The frustrating fact about those losses is that Destrehan actually had the lead late in several of those games.
"But we lost them at the end because we donít have the experience yet," Bourg said.
Another troubling issue for the Wildcats has been turnovers and a lack of offensive consistency.
"Weíre not consistent – we donít shoot the ball consistent," Bourg said. "We will also play a game without turnovers and the next game have 20 turnovers. Itís not really because of who we are playing, because most of the turnovers are unforced."
But Bourg believes his team has what it takes to get in a rhythm before district play begins in January.
"I think we will get there as the year goes on and hopefully we will be where we need to be come district time," he said. "I knew we would make a lot of mistakes early, but I believe we will grow as the year goes on."
Destrehan will head to Chalmette to take part in a tournament on Dec. 20 and will return home to face Salmen (8-1) on Jan. 2.
