Home surveillance used to track down hit and run driver

Surveillance equipment hooked up to a home in Luling was used by police to track down a hit and run driver, according to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.

After hearing a crash outside of his residence, a homeowner on Beaupre Drive ventured outside and found that his car had its front end smashed by another vehicle. While the vehicle that had hit his car had driven off, the Luling resident viewed footage captured on his surveillance camera and discovered that he had caught the entire wreck on tape.

"While responding to the crash, one of the deputies observed a red truck in the parking lot of Lakewood Elementary with the hood up," Capt. Pat Yoes, a spokesman with the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, said. "After determining that the red truck was involved, deputies canvassed the area and located the truck in the 200 block of Browning Drive in Luling."

Deputies spoke to the teen driver, who admitted to being involved in the crash, Yoes said. The driver told police that he was looking down in his vehicle and struck the parked car.

Charges have not been filed as of press time because the incident is still under investigation.
