Tiger marching band will lead 8 floats in Des Allemands parade
Michelle Stuckey - Feb 16, 2012
With more than 50 years of history, the Krewe of Des Allemands parade will roll for another year down its familiar route.
Brenda Folse, parade organizer, said that eight floats have signed up already but groups can join the parade until the last minute.
In keeping with tradition, the parade will roll on Sunday before Mardi Gras at 1 p.m.
The Hahnville High School marching band will play for the crowds during the parade.
This year’s king and queen, Bobby and Mae Belle Hogan of Bayou Gauche, will reign over the parade. The couple has also designed special beads and coozies to throw to onlookers.
This year’s grand marshals are cousins from Des Allemands: Lillian Dufrene and Mary Marcel.
Other parish royalty will also grace the streets of Des Allemands on Sunday. Catfish Festival queens and the Hahnville High School homecoming queen will ride in the parade and greet their subjects.
Full of unique flair and fun, each float in the Des Allemands parade has its own festive name, from the Krewe of Mixed Nuts and Easy Riders to Party Animals and the Krewe of Outcasts.
It’s not too late to add your quirky group to the line-up. Floats can join the krewe at $300 each and there is no charge for marching groups or specialty queens. Those interested in joining the parade this weekend can call Folse at (504)952-4889.
Folse said she hopes this year’s turnout will be as good, if not better than past years. She is hopeful for nice weather, with sunny 60-degree weather predicted for this Sunday.
The parade will begin on Whitley Road, travel up to Highway 90, turn into the town’s business district, head down De Jean St. towards Old Spanish Trail and then back up Lorraine Drive to the highway.
