Gustave F. Deister, 90, a longtime resident of Wassaic, N.Y., died on Jan. 29, 2012 at Sharon Health Care Center in Sharon, Conn. He was a rural letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 26 years retiring in 1984. He was born on Nov. 2, 1921 in Peine-Stederdorf, Germany, and was the son of the late Herman and Martha Schaprian Deister. He was a 1939 graduate of the Newtown High School in Newtown, N.Y. and from 1942 to 1945, he served in the U.S. Army in the combat zones of North Africa and Italy. On Oct. 4, 1947 in Wassaic, he married Margaret Rivenburgh, who survives at home.
Mr. Deister was a life member of the Wassaic Fire Company. During his tenure as a member, he served on the Board of Directors and held the offices of foreman, secretary and president. He also served the community as a member of the Board of Fire Commissioners of the Wassaic Fire District. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Amenia, N.Y. and served as an elder. He was a former Webelo leader for Boy Scout Troop No. 29 and a member of the Amenia-Wassaic Senior Citizens.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Barbara E. Lisi (husband Paul J.) of Newburgh, NY.., two sons, Paul F. Deister of Luling and Peter G. Deister (wife Margaret A.) of Amenia, and three grandchildren: Joseph P. Lisi of Ithaca, N.Y., Matthew P. Deister (fiance Jessica Wilson) of Wassaic and Austin M. Deister of Amenia. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Herman Deister.
