The HTV/Lions Club Bayou versus River All-Star football showdown will be held this Friday on the campus of Nicholls State University.
The all-star classic will start at 7 p.m. in John L. Guidry Stadium in Thibodaux.
Five players from Destrehan High School were selected to play in the game, including running back Kevin Smith, punter/kicker Daniel Cimino, cornerback Dillan Dent, defensive end Dereck Robinson and offensive lineman Ladell Wills.
Four players from Hahnville High School were selected to play in the all-star game, including wide receiver Ronnie Green, defensive end Dalton Simon, offensive lineman Robert R. Lay and center Truston Jones.
Tickets for the game cost $7 and can be purchased at the gate. All of the proceeds go to college scholarships and to Thibodaux Lion’s Club causes such as the Lions’ Crippled Children’s Camp and Eye Foundation.
The game will also be broadcast on a tape-delayed basis by HTV-10, and the times of the rebroadcast will be announced at a later date. NFL draft analyst Mike Detillier and HTV 10’s Stan Gravois will provide play-by-play and commentary.
Talented prep athletes from H.L Bourgeois, Ellender, South Lafourche, Assumption, South Terrebonne, Thibodaux, Central Lafourche, E.D. White, Terrebonne, Houma Christian and Vandebilt make up the Bayou team, while the River’s squad consists of standout high school athletes from Destrehan, East St. John, St. James, Hahnville, St. Charles, West St. John, Lutcher and Riverside.
James Bell, head coach at St. James, will lead the River team, while Central Lafourche High School Head Coach Travis Douglas will lead the Bayou team.
This year’s contest will mark the sixth consecutive year that the River region has participated in the game. Prior to the River region joining the game, the all-star bout slated Terrebonne Parish schools against Lafourche/Assumption Parish Schools with the Lafourche/Assumption team winning all six previous engagements. The Bayou schools lead the series at 3-2 and won last year’s game, 30-21. Joshua Johnson, running back from Thibodaux High and a Nicholls signee, was named MVP for the Bayou team. Mark Wright, quarterback from West St. John, was named MVP for the River team in the 2010 contest.
Brandon Jacobs, a current New York Giant and alum of Assumption holds the all-time rushing record in the game with 230 yards set in 2000. Phillip Livas, a graduate of South Terrebonne who played at Louisiana Tech, is second behind Jacobs running for 201 yards in the 2006 game. In last year’s game, Dh’aquille Williams, formerly of East St. John High School, set the record for receptions in a game (9) and yards in a game (158).
The Thibodaux Lion’s Club is the primary sponsor for the event and strives to award not only student-athletes, but support group members as well. Last season alone, the Thibodaux Lion’s Club distributed a total of $9,000 in scholarships to student-athletes and cheerleaders that participated in the game.
