Decision 2003 Special Edition
To help the people of St.
Charles Parish make their choice for Parish President on Nov. 15,
the St. Charles Herald-Guide prepared a list of 10 questions for
the candidates, incumbent President Albert Laque and Councilwoman

resident lands role in 'Runaway Jury'
The release of the motion
picture “Runaway Jury” last Friday has one local resident enjoying
her minute in the spotlight. Norco resident Cheryl Waguespack Clay
plays the part of Delores Kinnely, an occupational therapist who is
on the list of potential jurors for a multi-million dollar lawsuit
against a gun manufacturer. |

marine addresses Borromeo students on Iraq war
Students at St. Charles
Borromeo School in Destrehan were recently visited by Captain Ross
Parrish of the U.S. Marine Corps. Captain Parrish, a native of Destrehan,
served in Iraq from April to September 2003. While in Destrehan visiting
his parents, he stopped by to address the 5th through 8th grade students
on his experiences in the Iraqi War. In his honor, the students dressed
in patriotic colors and waved flags as he entered the gym to Marine
March. Students waved American flags and banners stating 'welcome
home', 'thank you', and 'USA!". |

to offer hospital dialysis center agreement
Patients and family members
who have been pleading with the St. Charles Parish Council for months
to help reestablish a dialysis center on the west bank were given
a welcome surprise Monday night when Parish President Albert Laque
announced the administration will soon place a loan agreement before
the council to help fund the center. |

Payment
to school employees could come as soon as November
On Wednesday night the school
board approved a measure to make a one time deferred payment for employees
of the school system. The three percent payment is based on the annual
salaries of all school system employees with the exception of the
superintendent and board members. |

On Wednesday, Destrehan
High teacher Dawn Jacobi was named the High School Teacher of the
Year for the state of Louisiana. Jacobi had been one of 24 finalists

the 80’s were the school lunches. While the food was bland in contrast
to the colorful local cuisine, the worst part had to have been the
long lines which stretched the length of a football field just to

Tuesday afternoon as Michael Meyer, 11, of Willowdale, climbed 25
feet up a tree to rescue a neighbor’s kitten. As he arrived near the
top where the kitten was stuck, he realized that he too would need
to be rescued. |

DNA tests delay Mayuex evidence transfer
A motion for discovery
in the murder trial of Willie Mayeux which was scheduled for Oct.
7 has been delayed, said prosecutors Thursday. Assistant La. Attorney
General Paul Knight, who is handling the prosecution, said the DNA
tests on multiple pieces of evidence have not been completed in
time for the scheduled motion.

to cast first ballot in new legislative districts
Voters in the southernmost
parts of St. Charles Parish will have a new item on their ballot in
Saturday’s election. Following the most recent redistricting of the
state legislature, residents of Bayou Gauche and parts of Luling and
Mimosa will find themselves in House District 105 instead of 56.

law targets high DWI fatalities
A law sponsored by Senator
Joel Chaisson (D-Destrehan) lowering the DWI level in the state of
Louisiana went into effect Tuesday. The new law lowers the threshold
of a DWI to .08 percent. |

bureau releases parish population estimates
The U.S. Census Bureau recently
issued its first county population estimates by age, sex, and race
since the 2000 census. The estimates for the nation's 3,141 counties
were as of July 1, 2002. The race data presented covers the population
who reported as one race alone or as one race in combination with
one or more races. |
