wins lawsuit with Shell over delinquent tax fees
Last Wednesday the St. Charles
Parish School Board, which is responsible for collecting all sales
taxes for the parish, successfully defended against a lawsuit filed
by Shell Oil Company. The suit arose out of penalty charges assessed
against Shell for its failure to pay sales taxes to the parish for
the periods of May 1999 through July of 2001. |

Daniel Perrilloux, 27, the
man convicted of an armed robbery that led to the death of convenience
store owner Luan Nguyen two years ago, was sentenced to 90 years in

neighborhood to get emergency levee
Residents of the Cajun Paradise
subdivision in Paradis will soon have some flood protection as a result
of a levee system which is being constructed around the development.
The 7000 foot levee is one aspect of the hurricane protection levee

confidence slips in September
Continued uncertainty at
the national level in the stock market and in international affairs
contributed to a decline in both the nation’s and Louisiana’s consumer
confidence indices (CCI) in September, according to Secretary of Labor
Dawn Watson. Though the September Louisiana CCI level of 90 was the
second lowest level since the state began calculating the index, it
was still higher than both the preliminary national index and the
preliminary southern regional index of 86.2 and 86, respectively.

In the aftermath of Tropical
Storm Isidore, some of the most affected residents are those who make
a living from growing sugar cane and vegetables. Sugar cane fields
across the parish suffered from severe “lodging” - or bending over
- as a result of moisture in the soil and high winds.
