Andrew C. Lee, a Luling resident and member of the Luling Volunteer Fire Department, was laid to rest last week following a battle with leukemia.

Larry Sesser, Director of Physical Plant Services for St. Charles Parish Schools, has been elected to serve as President of the La. School Facility Manager’s Association (LSFMA). The association’s members are involved in the daily operation of schools around the state.

Officials from the music video channel VH-1 will be making a stop in Hahnville this Tuesday to officially present the students at G.W. Carver Elementary School with a new $25,000 keyboard lab.
Oct. 27, 2001 Unemployment climbs slightly in September
St. Charles Parish recorded a small climb in the unemployment rate in September, going from 4.8 percent in August up to 4.9 percent.
Oct. 24, 2001 Schoolboard takes steps towards reapportionment
On Monday afternoon, members of the school board were shown the district map which was approved by the Reapportionment Committee. The new plan, which was rejected by the Parish Council, simplifies the current map somewhat by crossing the river at only one area in Destrehan while maintaining a minority district.
Oct. 24, 2001 School taxes, mosquito millage pass
St. Charles Parish voters approved all three tax initiatives on Saturday’s ballot, renewing the mosquito millage, adding a $28 million school bond issue and a new one-cent sales tax to benefit the school system.

As residents in St. Charles and surrounding parishes go to the polls today to elect a new justice for the supreme court, Harry Lemmon will be moving into his new office in the Poydras Center. The retiring justice, who resides in St. Charles Parish, said that retirement from the court has given him more time to do volunteer work, legal consulting, and, most importantly, be with his family.
Oct. 20, 2001 Lafon named superintendent of the year
The Louisiana Association of School Executives has named St. Charles Parish School Superintendent Rodey R. Lafon the 2001 Louisiana State Superintendent of the year. Lafon will be formally recognized at the LASE annual conference in November.

On Saturday the people of St. Charles Parish will be asked to take to the polls to decide on the next Justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court, as well as to vote on a pair of issues to bring money to the school system.

Two parish teachers have been selected as teachers of the year from the New Orleans region. Hettie Averite of Lakewood Elementary and Matthew Spitz of J.B. Martin, who were both teachers of the year in St. Charles, will represent the region in the statewide selection process which will culminate on October 24 when the Elementary, Middle, High School and overall teachers of the year are selected for Louisiana.

After nearly 20 years of petitioning from various organizations around the parish, the intersection of Highway 90 and Bayou Gauche Road has gotten traffic lights. The La. Dept. of Transportation and Development (DOTD) installed the lights this past week.
