climbs slightly in September

a small climb in the unemployment rate in September, going from 4.8
percent in August up to 4.9 percent. |

Schoolboard
takes steps towards reapportionment
On Monday afternoon, members
of the school board were shown the district map which was approved
by the Reapportionment Committee. The new plan, which was rejected
by the Parish Council, simplifies the current map somewhat by crossing
the river at only one area in Destrehan while maintaining a minority
district. |

taxes, mosquito millage pass
St. Charles Parish voters
approved all three tax initiatives on Saturday’s ballot, renewing
the mosquito millage, adding a $28 million school bond issue and a
new one-cent sales tax to benefit the school system.

Lemmon
looking forward to retirement
As residents in St. Charles
and surrounding parishes go to the polls today to elect a new justice
for the supreme court, Harry Lemmon will be moving into his new office
in the Poydras Center. The retiring justice, who resides in St. Charles
Parish, said that retirement from the court has given him more time
to do volunteer work, legal consulting, and, most importantly, be
with his family. |

The Louisiana Association
of School Executives has named St. Charles Parish School Superintendent
Rodey R. Lafon the 2001 Louisiana State Superintendent of the year.
Lafon will be formally recognized at the LASE annual conference in

Hettie Averite of Lakewood Elementary and Matthew Spitz of J.B. Martin,

on October 24 when the Elementary, Middle, High School and overall
teachers of the year are selected for Louisiana. |
