Nov. 29, 2003 Unemployment in St. Charles continues to fall
Jobs in St. Charles Parish continued to look rosy in the month of October, with the unemployment rate dropping from 5.9 percent to 4.7 percent.

Managers at the Davis Pond Freshwater Diversion Project are planning to test the water flow during the intermission between the duck seasons, Dec. 1-13. The project has run into difficulties with the guide levees and ponding area.
Nov. 26, 2003 Boutte students trapped by bus fire, no one injured
A school bus taking some 45 9 and 10 year-old children from Boutte Christian Academy on a field trip caught on fire around the Gonzales area at about 10 a.m. on Friday. The flames behind the firewall in the bus caused the children and 13 adults to quickly leave the vehicle and get as far away as they could.

The area’s first taste of cool weather was felt this week as temperatures registered in the low 40’s Tuesday night. The pleasant weather is expected to remain around the area until at least Sunday, with rain likely today and tomorrow.
Nov. 26, 2003 Local legislators help push senior drug plan
U.S. Representatives Billy Tauzin and David Vitter both voted Saturday morning, with a majority of their fellow house Republicans, to pass a major prescription drug plan for senior citizens through the House of Representatives. The plan passed a Senate vote Tuesday morning and is expected to have the support of President Bush in a few weeks.

J.B. Martin Middle School celebrated Veterans’ Day in grand style at an assembly attended by over 750 people. In addition to the student body, over 200 veterans and their guests were present.
Nov. 22, 2003 Accountability results mixed for district
On Thursday, the new school accountability results were released by the state. This is the second time the results have been released to the public since the state accountability program began four years ago. The results are based on Leap and Iowa test results, as well as attendance and drop-out rates.

A lawsuit filed recently by the Ormond Civic Association against St. Charles Parish has not progressed, according to Parish Legal Counsel Bobby Raymond.

Parish President Albert Laque won another term in office in Saturday’s election, defeating Councilwoman from District 3 Darnell “Dee” Abadie with about 54 percent of the vote.

Nov. 15, 2003 School board opposes I-49 Luling route
At Wednesday night’s meeting of the St. Charles Parish School Board, members unanimously passed a resolution requesting state officials to reject the two alternative routes proposed for the I-49 Interstate through Luling. The routes are identified as “W” (Willowdale area) and “T” (Barton Avenue area).
Nov. 12, 2003 Crime rates down in third quarter
The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office is reporting lower crime rates in the third period of 2003 as compared to the same period last year. According to the latest figures, there were 30 fewer total crimes in the months of July, August and September, a 4.8 percent decrease.

Ama residents were told to stay inside and shut off their air conditioners for a half hour Monday afternoon when the Cytec plant in Waggaman let out a release of ammonia.

This Saturday, duck hunters with leases to the north of US 90 will have their opportunity to bring home a bag as the hunting season for the eastern portion of Louisiana opens. Last Saturday, the western hunting zone (south of US 90) began.

At a public meeting held Tuesday night in Paradis, residents had the opportunity to see first hand the two alternatives being proposed for I-49 from I-310 to the Jefferson Parish line. Nov. 8, 2003 Police investigating second possible bridge suicide
The Sheriff’s Department is investigating a possible suicide that may have occurred on the Hale-Boggs Bridge in Luling, the second such suicide in two weeks.

The St. Charles Parish Council Monday night approved an ordinance that will allow it to liquidate adjudicated properties and share the revenues with several other bodies.

Nov. 5, 2003 Ormond Civic Association goes to court over new subdivision
The Ormond Civic Association filed a lawsuit against St. Charles Parish last week, saying that the parish illegally approved a new subdivision without proper drainage analysis.
Nov. 1, 2003 Cool snap has parish seeing orange
The slight cool snap this past week brought a welcome sight in many backyards around the parish -- oranges hanging from trees were actually orange. The satsumas in particular are making the transition from a dark green to bright orange, signaling the beginning of the fall harvest which is expected to last through December.

Nov. 1, 2003 Autopsy of student reveals lung condition
A student at Ethel Schoeffner Elementary School in Destrehan collapsed Tuesday during recess at the school. Authorities said Jimmy Tong, 10, of Destrehan, was taken to St. Charles Hospital after having a difficult time breathing and later died.

Wednesday afternoon police recovered the body of a New Orleans man who jumped from the Hale-Boggs Bridge in Luling on Oct. 25
