students trapped by bus fire, no one injured
A school bus taking some
45 9 and 10 year-old children from Boutte Christian Academy on a field
trip caught on fire around the Gonzales area at about 10 a.m. on Friday.
The flames behind the firewall in the bus caused the children and
13 adults to quickly leave the vehicle and get as far away as they
could. |

legislators help push senior drug plan
U.S. Representatives Billy
Tauzin and David Vitter both voted Saturday morning, with a majority
of their fellow house Republicans, to pass a major prescription drug
plan for senior citizens through the House of Representatives. The
plan passed a Senate vote Tuesday morning and is expected to have
the support of President Bush in a few weeks. |

results mixed for district
On Thursday, the new school
accountability results were released by the state. This is the second
time the results have been released to the public since the state
accountability program began four years ago. The results are based

At Wednesday night’s meeting
of the St. Charles Parish School Board, members unanimously passed
a resolution requesting state officials to reject the two alternative
routes proposed for the I-49 Interstate through Luling. The routes
are identified as “W” (Willowdale area) and “T” (Barton Avenue area).

Crime
rates down in third quarter
The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s
Office is reporting lower crime rates in the third period of 2003
as compared to the same period last year. According to the latest
figures, there were 30 fewer total crimes in the months of July, August
and September, a 4.8 percent decrease. |

past week brought a welcome sight in many backyards around the parish
-- oranges hanging from trees were actually orange. The satsumas in
particular are making the transition from a dark green to bright orange,

A student at Ethel Schoeffner
Elementary School in Destrehan collapsed Tuesday during recess at
the school. Authorities said Jimmy Tong, 10, of Destrehan, was taken
to St. Charles Hospital after having a difficult time breathing and
