St. Charles Parish Hospital recently received $5.2 million from the state to help defray costs of operating the 56-bed facility in Luling. The money was made available by the Rural Hospital Preservation Act which was passed by the La. Legislature.

At most schools, when the final bells ring the kids flock to the buses in a frantic effort to get home -- but not at Ethel Schoeffner Elementary in Destrehan. At ESE, 133 students stick around each day to participate in after-school tutoring programs helping them with everything from English to math to a drama workshop, and Principal Mary Schmidt says it keeps getting better.

East bank bike path begins construction
St. Rose and Destrehan residents should start oiling their bicycle chains and stretching their muscles. The groundbreaking ceremony for the first phase of the East Bank Bicycle Path was held Thursday morning at Charlestowne Street in St. Rose.

When Dina Stelly comes in from her night shift job, the only thing on her mind is getting a good day’s sleep. Accomplishing that task has been made a little easier for the Paradis resident with the help of Ivy, a “hearing dog” she recently purchased from a company in Washington D.C. which specializes in training dogs to help people who are deaf or hearing impaired.
