Students at New Sarpy Kindergarten Center culminated a two-week study of American history by recreating the first Thanksgiving in their classrooms on Friday. Students, parents, monitors and guests worked as a team to prepare costumes, tables, food and activities for the feast.

In an election with a low turnout but a tight result, Judge John Weimer beat Judge Mary Hotard Becnel for the 6th District Seat on the Louisiana Supreme Court.

A former St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Deputy is under arrest facing charges of malfeasance in office and extortion after a LaPlace woman accused him of asking her to pose for lewd photographs in exchange for leniency on a DWI arrest.

Nov. 14, 2001 Parish receives art grant
The Houma-Terrebone Arts and Humanities Council through the Louisiana Decentralized Arts Funding Program has granted $155,255 to non-profit organizations in the parishes of Assumption, Lafourche, St. Charles, St. James, St. John the Baptist and Terrebone to support art and cultural programs for the year 2001-2002. The program funds open-to-the-public art projects occuring between October 1, 2001 and September 30, 2002.

The Concerned Citizens of Norco staged protests Friday and Saturday against the Shell and Orion plants on the east bank of the parish, claiming the organizations are trying to buy out property at too low a cost.
Nov. 10, 2001 Gumbo Krewe bridges St. Charles and New York
Before Sept. 11, the chances of a connection between Allyssa Borey, a Girl Scout from Paradis, and Mike LaRosa, a firefighter from Brooklyn, NY, were pretty slim. Even afterwards, they may never have found a way to touch each other were it not for the efforts of the Gumbo Krewe.
Nov. 10, 2001 Parish, school board form partnership
At Thursday night’s Planning and Zoning Meeting, a development agreement was tentatively approved between the parish, the school board, and Ashton Plantation Estates, LLC. authorizing the donation of 19 acres from the developer to the parish to be used for future school and recreational facilities. The land is located at the site of the Ashton development which planners have hailed as a “progressive” neighborhood which would bring thousands of new residents to the parish.
Nov. 7, 2001 Local resident pushes for assisted living center in parish
“We need one of these in St. Charles,” said Bob Hickman, as he visited an assisted living center in his wife’s hometown of Thomason, Georgia. The facility the Luling resident was referring to was an old school building which had recently been renovated into a retirement community for senior citizens of the area.

The state legislature has passed a resolution honoring former St. Charles Parish resident Lt. Col. Robert J. Hymel, who was killed in the Sept. 11 attack on the Pentagon.

On Wednesday afternoon, Lakewood Elementary teacher Hettie Averite got a surprise from students and administration of the Luling school. October 31, 2001 was officially proclaimed “Hettie Averite Day.”
Nov. 3, 2001 Crime statistics down in third quarter
New statistics released by the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Department show a drop in crime for the first three quarters of the year.
