With the seniors of Hahnville and Destrehan High School taking their final walk last week, the St. Charles Herald-Guide invited a senior from each school to share her feelings on the high school experience. Here is what they had to say.

Louisiana was ranked the 11th worst state in toxic waste production in a recent study by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, with the two worst companies in the area of St. Charles Parish.

On Friday, 17 residents from around the river parishes graduated from the Master Gardener course, sponsored by the St. Charles Parish County Agent’s office. This was the first year the course has been offered locally and featured seminars from experts on a variety of topics.

Albert Cammon Middle School hosted their annual Career Day Program for the seventh and eighth grade students on May 17. A total of fourteen organizations with eighteen guest speakers participated in the program.

With the release of the LEAP scores last week, officials with St. Charles Parish Public Schools said they see both improvement and areas where more work is needed. The english language arts and mathematics results were released early so summer school needs could be assessed. Science and social studies results will be released later this week.

Brian Matherne, who plead guilty to child molestation charges two years ago, was denied an application for post-conviction relief on May 15.

Construction on the East Bank Hurricane Protection Levee may resume by the end of the month, according to Al Naomi with the Army Corps of Engineers.
May 18, 2002 Twin tears for two Tigers
Two teenage girls went under the knife at East Jefferson Hospital on March 28 to repair torn ACLs. But the parallels do not end there. Both girls injured the same leg less then three weeks apart from each other. Both girls are from Luling. Both girls play soccer. And both girls are on the Hahnville girls soccer team.

May 18, 2002 Norco subject of PBS special
Tomorrow residents of Norco will have the opportunity to preview a PBS documentary on the community which will be aired on PBS stations in July. The program is entitled “Norco, a Company Town Divided” and is touted as an objective look at the divisions between members of the community who disagree about the benefits of living close to the Shell refinery.
May 15, 2002 Local doctor enjoys retirement
There are few things that Dr. Joseph “Eddie” Isolani enjoys more in his retirement than heading down to his camp in Grand Isle and fishing for trout. The former family practitioner has been retired from his Luling practice since the late 80’s but has fond memories of his work as a parish doctor since the middle of the century when he moved here from New Orleans with his wife, Lee.
May 15, 2002 Sentences given in battery, auto cases
One conviction and three guilty pleas were heard Thursday in St. Charles Parish. Calvin McMillan, a 77-year-old Norco man, was convicted of simple battery.

The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Department is asking for help in the search for two men suspected of robbing two undercover narcotic officers on May 7.

On Thursday, The History Channel “Time Machine” visited two schools in Destrehan. Students at St. Charles Borromeo and Harry Hurst Middle Schools had the opportunity to walk through the bus and experience the five interactive stations based on popular T.V. programs on the cable station.

Three Hahnville High students were instrumental in saving a woman’s life on Tuesday afternoon of last week. The students had just completed their Heart Saver CPR certification the previous Friday and happened upon Paradis resident Eunice Mitchell minutes after she had collapsed in the parking lot of the West Bank Bridge Park.

Rachel Aucoin of Destrehan may only be 14 years old, but she’s been dancing across the stage for a long time now. This weekend she’ll take it a step further in the Jefferson Ballet Theatre production of “Thumbelina,” before heading off to New York this summer to study in the big leagues.

The state released its first report on school district accountability Thursday. Though the purpose of the report is to target school districts across the state that have a low performance record, officials in St. Charles Parish say that there may be an adverse effect on high performance districts.

At last week’s school board meeting, members voted to begin the process to expand the school system’s distribution center. Bids to nearly double the facility’s 4,644 sq. feet will be taken until June and construction is scheduled to begin July 1.
