Brandon Stein was convicted Wednesday of murder in the death of 17-year-old James Rogers last year. The second-degree murder conviction carries a mandatory life sentence with no chance of parole, probation or suspension of sentence.

March 22, 2003 Willowdale officials want golf vandals investigated
Three men were arrested Feb. 25 and charged with felonies for damage done around the Willowdale golf courses. Tyson Brasher, 17, Bayou Gauche; Daniel Matson, 18, Luling; and Christopher Thompson, 22, Des Allemands were arrested after being stopped at 2:04 a.m. for running a stop sign on Lakewood Drive.

Divided council approves cost-sharing pump project
After a heated debate about whether the measure was playing politics, the St. Charles Parish Council approved a measure Monday night that will allow Shell Chemical and Motiva Enterprises to help pay for an $8.6 million pump station in Norco.

March 19, 2003 Gassen Lane to become Antoine Lane
Residents of Gassen Lane in Luling will have to start sending out change of address forms. The Parish Council voted 7-2 Monday night to approve changing the name of the street from Gassen Lane to Antoine Lane.

School board members will vote on a measure tonight which would renew the contract with United Health Care to provide health insurance for the district’s employees. United replaced The Oath last April when the latter company filed for bankruptcy.

Pecco, a Belgian Malinois, was recently acquired by the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Department. The dog, fittingly born on 9-11-01, will aid the department with new threats associated with the war on terrorism. The new addition to the department was made possible by a donation from the Ormond Civic Association.

Although increased freshwater diversion has begun upriver in the Atchafalaya Basin, the Army Corps of Engineers says there is no need to take similar steps at this time in the Barataria-Terrebonne Estuary by opening the Davis Pond Project in Ama.

Hundreds of thousands of Louisiana public school students opened their test booklets this week, as students in 3rd through 10th grades took a variety of tests, including LEAP 21, which helps determine whether 4th and 8th graders advance to the next grade level.

An attempt to convert a former hardware store on River Road in Hahnville into multi-family housing was struck down Thursday night at the planning and zoning meeting. The special permit request to change the former Fisher Hardware building into three residential apartments was heavily opposed by residents in the area.

Two cab drivers were found dead Tuesday in what police are calling an apparent murder/suicide in St. Rose.
March 5, 2003 Foundation seeks green market approval at Ormond Plantation
The St. Charles Historical Foundation will request special permission from the planning and zoning commission Thursday night for the German Coast Farmers Market to operate at Ormond Plantation. The measure comes after the St. Charles Parish Zoning Ordinance of 1981 was amended at the January meeting by adding the definition of green market; and to allow green markets in OL, and C-2 or higher zoning districts as a special permit use.

Multi-family housing in Hahnville opposed by some residents
An attempt to convert a former hardware store on River Road in Hahnville into multi-family housing is being opposed by some residents on Oak Street. The measure will go before the planning and zoning commission Thursday night to change the former Fisher Hardware building into three residential apartments.

March 5, 2003 RRHS establishes Bumgarner Heritage Award
The River Road Historical Society is honoring one of its own with an award offered to area middle school students. Bille Bumgarner, a former RRHS board member and retired teacher, passed away last November. She spent nearly 30 years teaching in St. Charles Parish schools, including Mimosa Elementary, J.B. Martin Jr. High, A.A. Songy Elementary and Eual J. Landry Middle School, and was very active in the Gifted and Talented programs.

Lt. Governor Kathleen Blanco presented the St. Charles Parish Department of Economic Development and Tourism with a $7,500 check Thursday afternoon to help promote Louisiana Purchase Bicentennial events in the parish.
