Voters
to decide oyster lease issue
With the legislature convening
Monday, lawmakers passed a constitutional amendment limiting state
liability for property damage caused by coastal restoration projects
and dedicating budget surpluses, mineral royalty settlements and other
funds to the fight against coastal erosion. The measure came after
Gov. Mike Foster made a last minute appeal to legislators to take
the problem seriously or risk “not having a place to call home” in
the future. |

Joseph
pleads guilty to manslaughter
David Lynn Joseph pleaded
guilty last Wednesday to manslaughter in the death of his former girlfriend's
19-month-old daughter, Derica. Joseph allegedly shook and strangled
the girl last year while his girlfriend was at work.

the safety of her property and her children. It is becoming increasingly
difficult for her, though -- she says items have been stolen from

the police department should be doing more to help.

Birds
collected for West Nile test negative in St. Charles
Four more birds tested positive
for West Nile virus this week, bringing the year’s total to 52 positive
birds in 34 parishes. Sabine Parish was the only new parish added
to the list for this round of tests, with a blue jay testing positive
for the virus. The three other new birds came from Caddo, Lafayette
and Natchitoches parishes, which all previously had birds test positive
for the virus. |

Restoring
a piece of history
A group of St. Charles Parish
contractors recently completed a renovation on what has become the
most identifiable symbol of the City of New Orleans -- St. Louis Cathedral.
Hy-Tech Roofing Services of St. Rose was awarded the contract two
years ago to replace the slate roofing on the cathedral’s three steeples,
which were badly in need of repair. |

Anthology
on two former east bank schools published
Recently, a select group
of English students at Destrehan High School compiled an anthology
to commemorate the stories of Norco Primary (Apple Street) and Bethune
High Schools. The effort was funded on behalf of the Norco Community
Fund, which provided a grant for approximately $18,000.
