Board of Election Supervisors. He will take the place of Norco resident

approves building bids
The St. Charles Parish School
Board approved several bids Wednesday night to expand and upgrade
area schools. The measures are the result of the $28 million bond
issue that was passed by voters in October for this purpose.

to get major upgrade
Pretty soon star gazers
and astronomy buffs in St. Charles Parish will have reason to celebrate
when the planetarium introduces its new state of the art digital projector.
The planetarium will become the first in Louisiana and one of the
first five in the nation to switch over to the new system which was
developed by Minolta recently. |

The St. Charles Parish
Council, by a 6-3 vote Monday night, placed a moratorium on construction
of a proposed Ormond shopping center until additional drainage is

The St. Charles Parish School
Board will decide tonight whether or not to join in the lawsuit filed
against the state because of a bill signed into law by Gov. Foster
last month which allocated $17.4 million from the tobacco money settlement

tariffs total $8 million
Louisiana crawfish processors
who filed an anti-dumping petition in 1996 will finally be rewarded
for their efforts when at least $8 million in tariffs collected by
the U.S. Customs Service are distributed in coming months, Commissioner
of Agriculture and Forestry Bob Odom said this week.

New
pastor comforts and encourages parish
With the annual Louisiana
Catfish Festival raging this weekend in Des Allemands, St. Gertrude
Catholic Church is the center of attention for many residents of St.
Charles Parish seeking great food and fun. The small parish has been
holding the event for many years, but this year is particulary special.
The community has survived a tragedy with the loss of their pastor
in a boating accident last December. In light of the success of the
festival and the recovery of the parish itself, appreciation and recognition
must be given to the church’s new pastor, Reverand James Bach who
had to step in to the position during a time of much saddness.

A new bulk-cement ship unloader
arrived at the Port of South Louisiana’s Globalplex Intermodal Terminal
in Reserve, Louisiana on June 14th. The $2,700,000 Carlson screw-type
unloader was delivered to the Bulk Dock of the terminal which is operated
by Kinder-Morgan. |

The proposal to build a
truck stop on Hwy. 90 in Des Allemands will be discussed at a meeting
of the St. Charles Parish planning and zoning commission tomorrow
night. The commission will consider a request by Annabel and Donald
Hogan for a special permit for a truck stop with video poker, a restaurant
and small shops. |

Rape,
molestation suspects arrested
An unidentified man was
arrested in Destrehan Thursday morning after allegedly molesting his
14 year-old step-daughter. According to the Sheriff’s Office, from
March through May of this year the 41 year-old man allegedly molested
his step-daughter on three separate occasions. |

Charles Parish was awarded the annual Robert Gronauer Award for "Outstanding

a brick program moving forward
Residents of St. Charles
Parish who attended the old Destrehan High School on River Road will
have the opportunity to reminisce about their school days later this
summer when the first 200 engraved bricks are laid around the school’s
old flagpole. The bricks are part of a drive by alumni of the school
to beautify their former campus which used to occupy the land in front
of present day Harry Hurst Middle School. |

Although the rate change
