At Wednesday night’s school
board meeting, members voted to approve an ordinance allowing the
board to begin collecting a tax on all hotel and motel rooms in the
parish this year. The tax was approved by the River Parishes Tourist

center needs donors
With the demand for blood
currently outpacing collections, the Blood Center is urging all eligible
donors to give blood. Traditionally one of the highest months of the
year for blood usage, January 2003 has already witnessed blood shortages
across the country. Compounding the situation locally, deferrals are
up five percent, making it more difficult to collect the necessary
blood and blood components to supply New Orleans area hospitals.

of Jazz' comes to West Regional Library

onto the international culture scene around 1920, visual artists were
inspired by the exuberance, power and emotion of this uniquely American
music form. A new traveling exhibition by the Louisiana State Museum
illustrates the many ways jazz has been interpreted by artists over
the past century. Entitled “The Art of Jazz,” the exhibition will
be on view at the St. Charles Parish Library’s West Regional branch

Unemployment in St. Charles
Parish climbed for the month of November to 5.7 percent, or 1,300
residents, compared to 1,200 or 5.3 percent in October. This reflects
a national trend of increased unemployment. |

K-Mart building rezoning approved by P&Z
At Thursday night's meeting
of the planning and zoning commission, members voted to approve a
measure regarding the rezoning of a portion of the St. Charles Plaza
shopping center. The measure, requested by St. Charles Plaza Partners,
LLC, changed the classification for the former K-Mart building and
a portion of the parking lot from C-2 to C-3. |

The year in review
• Jan. 7 -- The Parish
Council began the year in much the same way it spent the previous
year -- delaying a vote on reapportionment. Some citizens have asked
for the parish charter to be changed to allow four districts on either
side of the Mississippi River rather than seven total. By the end
of the year, the districts had not changed. |
