David Lynn Joseph, 22, of New Sarpy, was arrested on Saturday and charged in the beating death of 18-month-old Derica Wallace, daughter of his girlfriend, Jessika Wallace.

HAHNVILLE — 78 years ago, Syl Caillet was a young man operating a small grocery store in Hahnville that would be known throughout the parish as “the place to get a nickel po-boy.” Little did he know that he would operate that small country store named, Westside Food Land, side-by-side with his wife-to-be Maybelle Baudoin of Raceland, for the next 45 years.

Ursula Kelly, a dispatcher with the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office, has been honored with the Deputy of the Year Award for 2001. Kelly is a five-year veteran with the Sheriff's Office.
Feb. 20, 2002 Bridge run 2002
The fifth annual Orion Refining United Way Bridge Run/Walk will take place Saturday, April 13. Dubbed “Louisiana’s Altitude Challenge” because of its demanding course across the Hale Boggs Bridge, this year’s event is expected to attract 2,000 participants. The average incline for most of the course is between a four and eight percent grade, reaching a maximum height of 175 feet above sea level.

The Krewe of Lul took to the streets Saturday afternoon for their 25th annual parade.On Sunday, the Krewe of Des Allemands rolled through the streets of the bayou town attracting thousands to its route. This was more or less the town’s 40th year of this parade.

The St. Charles Parish public school system is gearing up for the spring offering of community education courses. A newsletter was sent this past week to all homes in the parish and provides a detailed list of the courses being offered this semester, as well as instructions on how residents can register.

With all the interest locally in creating a farmer’s market in St. Charles, the Department of Economic Development and the County Agent’s office hosted an informative meeting last week with Kay Roussell, manager of the successful Crescent City Farmer’s Market in New Orleans. The issue of the 19 acre land donation from Ashton Estates, LLC to the parish is still being discussed by parish officials and developers. The donation agreement hit a snag at last month’s planning and zoning meeting due to a seven year time limit that the parish would have to begin construction of a school on the property.
Feb. 6, 2002 Local artist comemmorates the Krewe of Lul's Silver Anniverary parade
So that the Krewe of Lul’s 25th anniversary is properly celebrated, local artist Peyton Dufrene has created a commemorative print in honor of the local parade’s history. The print contains illustrations of several of the parish’s historical landmarks as well as the names of all 25 of the past Kings and Queens.

The St. Charles Parish Council learned Monday night they may face a lawsuit from Ray Matherne, developer of Fashion Plantation Estates Subdivision, after rescinding an agreement for a railroad crossing when several residents spoke against it.

The $28 million dollar bond issue that was approved by voters last October was the purpose of a special meeting of the School Board on Wednesday night. At the meeting the four sealed bids the parish had received from investment companies interested in purchasing the bonds were opened.

Crime in St. Charles Parish dropped 4.5 percent in 2001, according to new statistics recently released by the Sheriff’s Office.
