Paradis neighborhood gets the gift of water this Christmas By Allen Lottinger, Jr. After more than 20 years, the Cajun Paradise neighborhood in Paradis is getting a parish water line installed. The area is the only residential area in St. Charles without access to parish water. The neighborhood has approximately a dozen homes, all of which have relied on wells to supply water to their homes. Parish officials said that by early January, all residents who want should have parish water running through their faucets. The reason it has taken so long for homes in the area to get the parish water was the fact that the homes are bordered by a railroad track to the south, which is a right of way for several underground utility lines, and wetlands on all other sides. After getting the necessary clearance, the parish this week installed an eight inch water line under the tracks. The parish will also install a fire hydrant and water meters to service the homes. So far, four residents of Cajun Paradise have requested a meter. That number should increase though as word spreads about the water line. “We are encouraging everyone to apply for service now so we can install the water meters all at once,” said Waterworks Director Robbie Brou. Brou said that no sewer lines are being installed at this time. Homes in the area use private sewerage treatment plants. The cost for residents in Cajun Paradise to access install a water meter is $225 for a 3/4 inch line, $300 for a one inch line, and $1,000 for a two inch line. A small deposit is also required. After applying for the water service, residents will be responsible for installing a water line from the meters, which will all be in one location, to their homes.
