No one injured in Monday train crash

By Blake M. Petit
Managing Editor

Gassen Street residents were given a shock Monday night when a train struck an unoccupied vehicle in the Luling neighborhood.

The vehicle, owned by Derek Cheramie of Luling, was being towed southbound across the Union Pacific railroad tracks when a tow strap broke, stranding it. According to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, the people towing the vehicle attempted to reattach the broken strap when they heard a train whistle and saw the locomotive approaching them on the tracks. Fearing a collision, they fled to safety and the train struck the vehicle.

No one was injured in the crash. Police say no citations will be issued because the vehicle was inoperable and being towed at the time of the accident.
