Killona man killed for gambling jackpot

By Blake M. Petit
Managing Editor

A Killona man was murdered in a Harvey apartment complex Sunday night after winning $4,000 in illegal gambling winnings, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Donell Stipe, 38, of Killona, and Samuel Carter, 25, of Marrero, were leaving the complex and getting into a car shortly before 10:30 p.m. when they were approached by two armed men demanding money. They surrendered the money, and the suspects opened fire on them, one with an AK-47 and the other with a .40 caliber pistol. Jefferson Parish Sheriff Harry Lee said that detectives believe Stipe had won $4,000 in an illegal dice game.

Carter suffered minor wounds on his hands and was treated and released from the hospital. Stipe was shot several times and pronounced dead at the scene. Residents of the apartment complex said they heard gunshots but were unaware of the shooting, the 40th homicide in Jefferson Parish in 2003.

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to contact the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office detectives division at (504) 364-5300 or Crimestoppers at 822-1111.
