School system to hire internal auditor
The St. Charles Parish School Board voted at the December meeting to hire a full-time auditor to keep track of the district’s finances. Officials believe the measure will help the district to better keep track of finances for the coming school year.

A Luling woman walking on the west bank levee Wednesday evening was fatally struck by a four-wheel all-terrain vehicle. She died Thursday. The man driving the vehicle has been charged with negligent homicide.

School officials and residents of Norco celebrated the open house of the Norco Community Education Initiative Thursday at the Adult Education Center on Apple Street. The initiative is the result of a $350,000 donation made back in February by Shell to the St. Charles Parish School System.

It was a long night in New Orleans, but Democratic Senator Mary Landrieu held on to her senate seat for a second term, defeating Republican challenger Suzanne Haik-Terrell by taking 52 percent of the vote.

East Bank residents have a new place available to gather with Wednesday’s opening of the rebuilt St. Rose Community Center on Mockingbird Lane.

Dec. 7, 2002 Public works gets leeway in subdivision approvals
The St. Charles Parish Public Works Department has a little more leeway in determining the layout of future subdivisions. An ordinance passed by the parish council Monday night grants the director of public works power to approve of trees and shrubbery planned in the construction of a subdivision.
Dec. 4, 2002 Humane society granted on-site vet
The St. Charles Parish Humane Society got good news about expenditures Monday night from the St. Charles Parish Council. The council voted unanimously to pass an ordinance that will allow the humane society to hire a part-time on-site veterinarian.
Dec. 4, 2002 Nine grants awarded from Norco Community Fund
Grants ranging from $1,800 to $9,700 have been awarded from the Norco Community Fund to nine organizations serving the Norco Community. The grantees will be honored at a noon luncheon on Friday, December 6, 2002 at the La Maison Magnolia Reception Hall.
Dec. 4, 2002 Mormons to build chapel in Luling
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is holding a groundbreaking ceremony on Saturday, December 7th at 10 a.m. as the church prepares to build a new chapel at the end of Lakewood Drive in Luling.
