August 20, 2005 One hospitalized in school bus crash By Blake M. Petit A Luling woman was hospitalized after her vehicle rear-ended a school bus on Highway 90 Tuesday morning. According to state police, Ginger R. Rockweiler, 49, was driving in the left lane of US 90 when her vehicle struck a school bus stopped at a traffic light at the corner of Paul Maillard Road. The school bus was driven by Walter James Oats, 62, of Luling, and had no passengers at the time of the crash. Police said that Rockweiler was apparently not paying attention to the stopped traffic ahead when her vehicle, a 1998 Ford Winstar, struck the bus. She was wearing a seat belt and her airbag did properly deploy, preventing critical injuries. However, her injuries were serious enough that she had to be transported by helicopter to West Jefferson Medical Center. Police say that speed was a factor in the crash, not drugs or alcohol. Rockweiler was cited for careless operation. Trooper Alan Rickmeier is investigating the incident. Blake M. Petit can be reached at BlakeP@heraldguide.com or at 758-2795, ext. 215.
