sugar industry could be impacted by trade deal
Is sugar among a host of
American industries soon to become obsolete as the global economy
takes shape or will the product continue to be protected by way of
tariffs on all imported sugar? That is the question industry officials
are waiting to have answered as the U.S. nears ratification of the
Central American Free Trade Agreement, which would eliminate tariffs
on sugar and other commodities between the United States and five
major sugar producers: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras
and Nicaragua. |

ACT scores up slightly
While Louisiana’s scores
remained steady overall this year on the American College Test (ACT),
the scores in St. Charles have risen slightly over last year. The
district’s average composite score, which includes public and nonpublic
students, increased from 20.3 in 2002 to 20.4 in 2003. Over the past
five years, the overall score has risen from 20.1 in 1999 to 20.0
in 2000 to 20.2 in 2001 to 20.3 in 2002 to 20.4 in 2003.

Corps
orders parish to cease and desist levee work
The Corps of Engineers has
ordered the parish to cease and desist work done on a levee in Paradis
in response to flooding during last year’s hurricane season. The 7,000
foot levee is one aspect of the hurricane protection system, which
is being built for the west bank of St. Charles Parish.

this school year. The local educators have been selected by the

Greg Champagne has been elected Sergeant-at-Arms of the Louisiana
