Local
October candidates offered public forum
With several last-minute
qualifiers in several races last Friday, the ballot for the Oct. 5
election has been set. The
St. Charles Herald-Guide is offering candidates in all contested local
races an opportunity to speak to the public through the newspaper.
Candidates are asked to submit a column, approximately 500 words,
outlining their positions and ideas directly to the public, along
with a photograph. We request that columns and photographs be submitted
by Sept. 6. |

Retired
teacher attends 50th first day of school
On the first day of school,
students are excited and also a little apprehensive. For 50 years
now, Sylvia Hanson, 79, has been greeting them warmly and helping
them settle in. Since 1952, she has been welcoming students back to
school. When Hanson, a retired teacher, showed up Thursday at Mimosa
Park Elementary school for her 50th first day of school, students,
teachers, and administrators at the school honored her with a bouquet
of flowers and balloon to show their appreciation for her presence
on their campus for so many years. |

As the new school year began
this past week, Superintendent Rodney Lafon gave a rundown of what

year. Lafon, who is in his eighth year as superintendent, said that

system which has enjoyed relative success when it comes to educating

Cargo
airport goes to Donaldsonville
On Thursday, the Louisiana
Airport Authority (LAA) along with the planning and engineering consulting
firm URS announced the recommended site for a new multi-modal airport.
With Governor Mike Foster on hand, the LAA revealed that the site
would be located in the vicinity of Donaldsonville and White Castle
within the parishes of Iberville, Assumption and Ascension.
