A year of committees, meetings
and deliberations was finally completed Monday night when the St.
Charles Parish Council unanimously passed a resolution adopting the
St. Charles Overall Planning Effort (SCOPE) Plan, a five-year strategic
plan to guide the economic and cultural growth of the parish.

passed unopposed by the Louisiana State Legislature this week.

Former
assistant DA given three years probation
Jerry Rome, former assistant
district attorney for St. Charles Parish, was sentenced to community
service and counseling Thursday morning by Judge Emile St. Pierre.
Rome was also given a three-year suspended sentence and three years
active probation. He must spend eight hours a day, one day a week
in community service for 100 days. |

on Aging held its 4th Annual Fishing Rodeo on Friday, April 5. Approximately
75 senior citizens from across the parish came out to the Spillway
recreation area to enjoy the sunny weather and take part in the rodeo,

At the west bank SCOPE (St.
Charles Overall Planning Effort) public hearing Tuesday night, the
turnout was scarce. Only a handful of residents showed up to hear
the new strategic plan developed by parish residents and facilitated
by South Central Planning and the UNO Center for Economic Development.
The hearing was also broadcast on public access cable.

arraigned for murder, malfeasance
Four suspects in two separate
criminal cases pled not guilty to their charges in Judge Robert Chaisson’s
courtroom Wednesday morning. |

Parish
school construction management contract awarded
Last week at a special meeting
of the school board, members awarded a $680,000 construction management
contract to Carother’s Construction Inc. out of Baton Rouge. The company
had lowest bid with 2 percent of the total construction cost of the
$28 million dollars in new construction and renovations that will
take place as a result of the bond issue that was passed in October.
The other company involved bid 2.5 percent. The job of the construction
manager is to make sure that all projects stay within budget.

students learn science outdoors
Lakewood Elementary School
fourth graders began training to become Earthkeepers at Jean Lafitte
National Historical Park & Preserve in January. Earthkeepers is
the program implemented by Teaching Responsible Earth Education to
teach science concepts in a unique way. |

coast study completed
The project that began last
November to study the German Roots of St. Charles Parish has recently
been completed. The folklorist team of Donlon & Donlon reported
the results to local residents Tuesday morning at the United Way office.
