September 30, 2003 All the food, none of the money In Salt Lake City, Utah, there is a cafe that offers priceless food. There isn’t even a menu at the “One World Cafe” owned by Denise Cerreta. Each day, Denise cooks whatever items come into her head and sets out an entree, salad, soup and dessert. The customers then take the amount of food that they want and leave however much money that they feel the meal was worth. She doesn’t even have a cash register, just a basket for the money. One reason why this works in Utah. The people are honest. Do you think that this kind of place would work anywhere else, or even here? It is sad, but anywhere else, this innovative woman would be taken advantage of and run out of business. She says that she makes enough money with the cafe to cover food and expenses. Could she do the same here? Could a restaurant that depended on the honesty of its customers survive in South Louisiana? Would people eat their fill and leave $1 or maybe even nothing? Would they tell their friends that they could get free food at this cafe? Would the friends then eat their fill and then leave nothing? Will Cerreta be run out of business now that her story has gone nationwide? Unfortunately, the answer is probably yes. |
