Levee could have been built already
The west bank of St. Charles Parish could already have its hurricane protection levee in place had the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers not refused to locate it where the parish wanted it years ago.

Sept. 22, 2005 Lessons learned
Hurricane Katrina, they are already saying, will go down in the books as the greatest natural disaster in American History. It was a disaster on many levels -- the intensity of the storm, the crippling, backbreaking winds, and of course, the infamous breaching of levees that led to the flooding of New Orleans and much of the area, leaving thousands of people homeless or unemployed.
Sept. 22, 2005 Rising tides of emotions
We all had a very emotional three weeks watching helplessly as Mother Nature proved her forces too great an opponent for our maze of levees designed to keep her in check. At least not the ones we have constructed thus far.
Sept. 22, 2005 Hopefully we learned a lesson, MRGO must go
During the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the nation got a view of southeast Louisiana like never before. Some of it was good, some bad.
Sept. 17, 2005 Public officials serve parish well in Katrina
It’s been a weary two weeks - - evacuating, sitting it out, returning amidst numerous delays, cleaning up and planning to make repairs.
Sept. 17, 2005 Tough times don't last... tough people do!
These past two weeks have been extremely challenging for all of us. We have been faced with ever-changing challenges that have altered not only our lives, but have changed the entire world.
Sept. 10, 2005 We prefer Katrina as the heroine of a novel
It could be the name of a heroine in a romance novel. Or a slave who saves her master in Civil War days.
Aug. 27, 2005 Environmentalists should attack dead zone
The fertilizer that is growing bigger crops in the midwestern states is killing the fish and shrimp off the coast of Louisiana.
Aug. 27, 2005 Honoring at the right time
In sports, it’s rare to receive such a high honor as a jersey being retired while a player is still at the height of his or her career. Usually, organizations wait until that player becomes a legend or passes on before honoring them like they should have when they were alive.

How long will our luck hold?
Brace yourself, with the prediction of an active hurricane season and the arrival of what has traditionally been our peak portion of the storm season, if our luck doesn’t hold, the next eight weeks or so could be intense. Hurricane season is less than half way gone and during the perceived slow period, we have already dealt with several storms making their acquaintance on the Gulf of Mexico. A couple have also found their way onto the central Gulf Coast, and one minimal storm has found a direct hit to our area.

Aug. 24, 2005 A tradition worth trying
Several southern states observe a tradition that many of us in south Louisiana have never seen before. It seems that during a funeral procession, when the line of cars is following the hearse to the cemetery, all the cars on the same side of the street pull over and let the procession go by.
Aug. 20, 2005 Airport summit a mystery
Yesterday’s airport summit was no doubt an important one, but one whose story will take some time to tell -- it was closed to the press. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin, Senator David Vitter and representatives from many of the impacted parishes came together to discuss the future of Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, something that effects everyone in the region.
Aug. 20, 2005 High gasoline prices is not all bad
The signs told it all.
Aug. 17, 2005 Give neighborhood crime, drugs a going-away party
For decades, we here in St. Charles Parish have been blessed with a quite and safe community. Often, our problems appeared dwarfed by those of our larger neighboring parishes. In many ways, we were in a time capsule, enjoying yesterday’s sense of security in today’s setting. But unfortunately, everything must change and St. Charles Parish is no exception. Our parish is growing and so to will our exposure to today’s concerns.
Aug. 13, 2005 Blair takes action
With not one, but two recent terror attacks on the city of London, British Prime Minister Tony Blair has made a bold statement to those coming to his country to incite panic -- stay out.
Aug. 13, 2005 The Saints won't go marching out
They go together like rice and gravy, coffee and cream. Where else could you find a partnership like the Saints and New Orleans?
Aug. 10, 2005 The beginning of a new school year
Can you believe it? Another summer has come and gone already. Three sure signs tell us it's so. Football practice has started, parent have been stripping school supplies of the shelves, and starting this Monday, deputies will be set up in school zones all across St. Charles Parish attempting to slow motorist as hundreds of school busses take to the streets.
Aug. 6, 2005 What is 'practicable'?
Tuesday night, over 200 residents of the West Bank of St. Charles Parish were told by a representative of the state highway administration that the law prevents the southerly route for I-49 if a “more practicable” route is available that is less damaging to the wetlands. The “more practicable” alternative, according to the representatives at the meeting, are the two potential routes that come north of the Southern Pacific railroad tracks that runs the length of the parish.
Aug. 6, 2005 Don't give up on I-49 south
We keep hearing ominous sounds from those planning the future of I-49 through St. Charles Parish that it is not possible to run I-49 south of U. S. 90. Why?
Aug. 3, 2005 Where did all the cameras come from?
The television cameras appeared seemingly from nowhere Monday night, as most of the local television stations -- along with a photographer from the New Orleans newspaper -- swarmed into the St. Charles Parish Courthouse in Hahnville to snap pictures and get sound bytes of citizens upset with the parish over the recent trip to the National Association of Counties convention in Hawaii.
