Some parish voters will have new districts
By Renee Simpson
Parish officials recently announced that revised St. Charles Parish Council districts approved and submitted in June have received pre-clearance by the U.S. Department of Justice.
Because this requirement has been completed, the upcoming Oct. 22 gubernatorial primary election will utilize the revised districts, based on 2010 U.S. Census data.
Even though the parish’s population rose about 10 percent to 52,780, the majority of council districts have survived redistricting basically intact. One larger change created a second cross-river district by adding parts of Destrehan east of the Hale Boggs Bridge to Council District 2. District 2 also includes parts of Old Luling, the Barton Avenue area and Willowdale. Elsewhere, District 1 remains a cross-river district, encompassing Killona, Hahnville, parts of Luling and Boutte near the bridge and parts of Red Church subdivision in Destrehan.
“The plan was developed in a transparent manner, and the public can be assured they have accomplished all of the requirements set forth for redistricting,” said Kevin Bellanger, CEO of the South Central Planning and Development Commission, whose firm was hired by the council to reapportion the seven districts.
New district lines have also been drawn and approved by the state legislature and senate. House districts 56, 57 and 92 and senate districts 2 and 9 have new boundaries, and residents are encouraged to view them as many are now within new districts. The deadline to register to vote in the Oct. 22 election is Sept. 21. Early voting will take place the week of Oct. 8. Oct. 22 will feature local primary elections for parish council, clerk of court, sheriff, assessor, state senator and state representative, with run-off elections scheduled Nov. 19.
Local districts also pertain to areas covered by local justices of the peace and constables.
The approved redistricting plan and other considered alternatives are available for viewing at stcharlesparish-la.gov/council under ‘Redistricting 2011.’ To get information on polling locations, visit the St. Charles Parish Registrar of Voters online at stcharlesparish-la.gov/registrar.
