State Police celebrate 75 years of service

The Lousiana State Police celebrated its 75th anniversary on July 27 in the Training Academy Auditorium in Baton Rouge. The ceremony included the police Honor Guard, recognition of past superintendents and retirees, a tribute to fallen troopers, comments by Superintendent Colonel Mike Edmonson and a viewing of "75 Years of Pride," a historical retrospective of the department.

Created on July 28, 1936 under Act 94 of the Louisiana Legislature, the State Police continues to be an organization filled with rich history. Its humble roots stem from the combination of the State Highway Patrol and the Bureau of Identification and Investivation laying the foundation for what is now a modern, well-equipped and well-trained department.

The Louisiana State Police has provided vital services to its citizens throughout the decades helping to shape the state and country. From providing critical infrastructure security at the Huey P. Long Bridge during World War II to interdicting and investigating illegal weapons and narcotics trafficking, the LSP has served at the forefront in ensuring the safety of Louisiana’s citizens. The department has continued this tradition through its participation in fugitive task forces, serial killer investigations, hurricane safety and preparedness, protecting children from sexual predators, traffic enforcemen and public education. The State Police motto, "Courtesy, Loyalty and Service" was adopted in 1937 and continues to reflect the core values of the organization today.

"This momentous day is not only to recognize the proud history of State Police, but to also honor and pay tribute to the troopers who died in the line of duty in service to Louisiana," said Col. Edmonson. "We never lose sight that the badge that we wear is a privilege given to us by the citizens we serve, and is a representation of the turst the public has instilled in us since the inception of the State Police."
