Destrehan 3-0 going into weak Tarpon matchup

Jefferson, Nelson lead Wildcats over winless Tigers 41-14

The Destrehan Wildcats came into last Friday night's game on a scoring rampage. The team had scored 82 points in their first two games. Their opponent, the Terrebonne Tigers, had not scored any points in their first two games, and although the Wildcats were unable to keep the Tigers out of the endzone, the game ended with Destrehan taking a lopsided 41-14 victory.

Quarterback Jordan Jefferson again led the Wildcats to victory with a stellar passing performance. In his third game as a starter, Jefferson threw for 262 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Jerico Nelson led the ground assault with 106 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. Nelson also had three receptions for 67 yards and a touchdown. Leading the receivers was Damaris Johnson with five catches for 99 yards and two touchdowns.

The Wildcats started the game aggressively. On the second play from scrimmage, linebacker Chris Richard intercepted a Tiger pass and gave the ball to the Wildcats on the Terrebonne 32-yard line. From there, a 27-yard pass to Nelson led to a five-yard touchdown run by running back Joel Banks. The Ryan Rome extra point was good, giving Destrehan a 7-0 lead with just over two minutes off of the clock.

Turnovers plagued the rest of the first quarter with Jefferson throwing an interception and defensive lineman Quince Perrilloux recovering a fumble.

It was not until the second quarter that the Wildcats found the endzone again, but when they did, they did not stop until halftime. The first score came on a 29-yard touchdown pass to Johnson. The next one came about 45 seconds later when linebacker Durrell Bell intercepted a Terrebonne pass and took it 28 yards for a touchdown. Rome split the uprights on both extra points, giving the Wildcats a 21-0 lead with seven and a half minutes left in the second quarter.

The next score could have been a spectacular 55-yard punt return by Joshua Victorian, but a holding penalty brought it back. Destrehan did not let up, however, and put the ball in again three plays later on a 25-yard touchdown pass to Johnson. The extra point was missed, leaving the Wildcats with a 27-0 lead at the end of the first half.

The Wildcats stayed on fire to open the second half. Johnson led off with a 25-yard kick return. Then a 25-yard reception to wide receiver Terrance Williams took them across midfield.

Nelson then did the rest with a 28-yard run with some flashy moves in the middle for a touchdown. The Rome extra point was good, bringing the score to 34-0.

Terrebonne fought back with its first points of the season on a 38-yard touchdown pass to Terrance Conrad to make the score 34-7.

The Wildcats then mounted an 81-yard drive highlighted by a fourth and 10 conversion on a 22-yard pass to wide receiver Tim Molton. Molton had 3 catches for 64 yards on the night. Nelson did the rest of the work having all of the rest of the yardage on the drive.

He finished it up with a 12-yard touchdown catch that put the score at 41-7 after the Rome extra point.

The Tigers had one more score left in them on an eight-yard run by Sean Lewis, but the game ended with Destrehan improving to 3-0 on the season. The Wildcats have outscored their opponents 123-14 so far this year.

The Tarpons have been reeling after losing their starting quarterback this season.

In the past two weeks, they have been soundly defeated by Jesuit and West Jefferson. Destrehan should run over them to the tune of a similar four to six touchdown victory.

Destrehan's high powered offense should have little trouble moving the ball against the Tarpons, and the Destrehan defense could possibly force a few more turnovers in this game.
