Students in Margaret Beltz’s 6th grade class at Lakewood Elementary conducted an experiment where they had to describe and summarize observations about the transmission and reflection of sound using paper cup telephones.

This was an inquiry lesson where the students were free to experiment and try different things in order to get the sound to transmit.  They discovered things like pulling the string tighter caused better transmission and that when the strings were overlapped, they could have multiple people involved in the “phone” conversation.  Some students even tried to do things to stop the transmission of sound.
