Indoor sports complex to open
Louisiana with more than 20,000 square feet of indoor AstroTurf and state-of-the-art practice equipment for virtually all sports needs, will hold its official Grand Opening on Friday, March 26 at 1:30 p.m. as political, business and community leaders dedicate this first-of-its-kind locally owned and operated sports entertainment facility.
The Big Easy Sportsplex includes a spectacular, Major League inspired 100 x 100-foot padded main field for hosting year-round sports leagues, camps, clinics, team practices and parties for athletes of all ages.
The brand new facility, located in the Elmwood Business Park, has the functional space, equipment and resources to cater to athletes of all ages in baseball, softball, cabbage ball, flag football and soccer.
The Big Easy Sportsplex offers its members the ultimate training and learning environment with “6-on-6” indoor arena baseball, “The Virtual Pitcher” machine, five baseball and softball pitching machines, eight batting cages, “The Video Locker,” and an entertainment center equipped with TVs and WiFi for birthday parties and corporate meetings.
Designed by Joey Cabeceiras, one of Louisiana’s renowned baseball trainers, the Big Easy Sportsplex provides athletes with the precise tools to fuel his or her passion for baseball or softball by teaching the mechanics of hitting, pitching and fielding to accommodate any member’s unique learning style.
The Big Easy Sportsplex brings outdoor sports inside with the kind of amenities that foster solid fundamentals,encourage good habits, promote health wellness to children and adults, and inspire parents to participate in the ultimate shared learning experience with their children.
A host of local and regional public officials as well as business and community leaders are expected to attend the ceremonial “First Pitch” at the Big Easy Sportsplex on Friday, March 26 at 1:30 p.m. for the official public dedication of Louisiana’s newest and most exciting sports and entertainment venue.
The Grand Opening festivities continue all weekend with a “Celebrity Home Run Derby” on Saturday, March 27 from 10 to 11 a.m., and the public will be able to try their skills in an “Open Home Run Derby” from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and again on Sunday, March 28 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Body of man from capsized boat identified - 1486 views
The body of a man lost when his workboat capsized in the Mississippi River near the Hale Boggs Memorial Bridge on Dec. 30 has been identified as Jayme Swafford, 36, of Hammond.
