Welcome to the special school edition of the Herald-Guide’s VIPs - Very Important Parishioners feature which zeroes in on St. Charles Parish teachers, students, parents and even the schools themselves who deserve a little recognition for the great strides they are making in the parish’s school system.

Pictured below and in the following list are just a few of the many faces who have been honored or awarded for their hard work - whether it be on a local, regional or national level.

DHS teacher gets art grant for concert

Destrehan High School talented art teacher Robert Fisher recently recevied a $1,000 grant from the River Region Arts & Humanities Council to put on a concert for DHS students.

Fisher intends to feature soprano Bridget A. Bazile in the concert to be held on Jan. 18, 2008 at 1:15 p.m.

Accreditaton for HHS in construction field

Hahnville High School has been awarded the Certificate of Accreditation from the National Center for Construction Education and Research.

This means that the school has met all requirements of the standarized recommendations of the sponsor and is declared as as accredited training and education facility.

Hahnville High School choir members selected by audition to participate in the LMEA District VII Honor Choir are: Savanna Barbee, Devin Durapau, Sierra Frickey, Michelle Hill, Anne-Marie Laque, Alyssa Worman, Allison Dukes, Falynn Freeman, Leah Voisin, Kelly Knezevich, Casey Bernard, Megan Kimble, Leah LaFleur, Deonesha McGuire, Katelin Schmill, Tanya Self, Jada Rome, Megan Barrios, Kimberly Dupre, Danielle Alexander, Katie Harrell, Marissa Brown, Paige O'Malley, Lynell Franklin, Amanda Knezevich, LeAnna Wilson, Natasha Hymel, Jonathan Dupre, Myles Butler, Edison Billiot, Grant Hebert, Matthew Meyer, Desmin Vinnett, and Rex Putnam.

The kids will perform on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008 at 4 p.m. at H.L. Bourgeois High School.

Borromeo teacher awarded supplies

St. Charles Borromeo School, second grade teacher, Gail Taylor recently was awarded $100 from the school’s spelling program supplier Zaner-Bloser.

During a presentation, a representative from the company encouraged the teachers to visit the company’s website and register for this monthly drawing.

Taylor will be allowed to purchase supplement material to go with this spelling series.

R.K. Smith names its council officers

R. K. Smith Middle School student council officers are: Jordan Laurent - secretary, Khadijah Cooper - reporter, Jiah Jefferson -president, and Najai Smith - vice-president.
