Ornamental and turfgrass field day set this weekend

The LSU AgCenter will conduct an ornamental horticulture and turfgrass field day for lawn and garden professionals on Oct. 9 at Burden Center Station in Baton Rouge.

The program will include morning tours, a luncheon presentation and an afternoon pesticide re-certification program. Organizers request registration by Oct. 2.

Tour highlights will cover ornamental horticulture research efforts in the turfgrass, nursery crops, floriculture crop production and landscapes.

Ornamental topics scheduled are container nursery crop studies pertaining to fertilization and media selection, landscape plant flooding tolerances, post-harvest cut flower studies, herbaceous and woody ornamental landscape evaluations and weed control in the landscape.

Turfgrass topics scheduled include seashore paspalum germination and establishment, an overview of new national turfgrass evaluation program (NTEP) cultivar trials, brown patch studies, weed control efforts for torpedograss, dallisgrass and dollarweed in turf and plant growth regulator work in bermudagrass and centipedegrass.

It appears that three people sought in connection with the theft of 23 cell phones from Boutte’s Walmart last week are not from St. Charles Parish and have committed similar robberies in other areas of the state, according to Sheriff Greg Champagne.
