Get your $20 flu shot at parish health clinic

LULING - The St. Charles Community Health Center, located at 843 Milling Ave., is administering flu shots for $20 as long as supplies last.

Appointments are not required and walk-ins are welcom.

Clinic hours are: Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Manage diabetes with these classes

LAPLACE - The River Parishes Hospital is currently holding diabetes education classes to help those who have been diagnosed with the disease or who have been struggling to better manage blood sugar levels.

Class dates are as follows: Oct. 8, Oct. 22 and Oct. 29 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the hospital’s medical pavilion in suite 309, and on Nov. 5 at the hospital’s old gift shop.

Craft fair and auction on tap this weekend

DES ALLEMANDS - St. Gertrude Catholic Church in Des Allemands will hold a craft sale and auction on Saturday, Oct. 6 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Father Mac Community Center.

The sale will feature handmade crafts, woodwork, baked goods and children’s activities. A choice of jambalaya or gumbo will be served for lunch.

ST. CHARLES - The St. Charles Sheriff's Office along with the St. Charles Parish School's Community Education is offering the following classes:

Self Defense Workshop for kids ages 6 to 14 at Destrehan High on Thursday, Oct. 18 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Child fingerprinting on at Destrehan High on Thursday, Oct. 18 from 6 p.m. to 7p.m.

Self Defense for Women & Teenagers on Thursday, Oct. 25 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Destrehan High.

Grant applications NOW being accepted

LAPLACE - The River Region Arts & Humanities Council is taking applications for its grant funding program for 2008.

Writing group meets monthly on Tuesday

LAPLACE - The River Parishes Writing Group meets 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month at the central branch of the St. John Library on New Highway 51 in LaPlace.

Pumpkin patch is back this October

THIBODAUX - The United Methodist Chruch Pumpkin Patch is back again this fall.

The church’s grounds located at 1255 Canal Blvd. in Thibodaux have become a sea of orange and the patch officially opens on Oct. 6 and is open from 8 a.m. to noon.

Republican women hold October meet

LULING - The next general meeting of the Republican Women of St. Charles will be held on Oct. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the home of Brenda Thompson at 513 Maryland Dr. in Luling.

Plantation's tour celebrates tradition

VACHERIE - St. Joseph Plantation announces its second annual Mourning Tour featuring the customs and rituals of 19th century Creole Louisiana now through Saturday, Nov. 3.

The house will be dressed in full deep mourning - according to the old prescribed protocol of mourning.

The plantation is located along River Road in Vacherie with daily tours Monday through Saturday at 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. and on SUndays at noon and 4 p.m.

Presbyterian church holds parish-wide recycling drive

LULING - First Union Presbyterian Church will hold at recycling drive on Saturday, October, 27 from 9 a.m. to noon at the St. Charles Plaza along Highway 90 and at the New Sarpy Annex.

Acceptable materials include: plastic containers, paper, cardboard, paperboard, shredded pager in bags, newspapers, magazines, phone books and metal containers such as aluminum and steel. Please, no glass.
