NICE CATCH. In mid July, brothers Brian and Dave Dufrene of Hahnville and Luling were fishing waist deep in the Grand Isle surf hoping to catch a few fish for dinner, when Dave hooked the “big catch” pictured above.

With no luck, Brian tried to help his brother reel in this 50-pound stingray with a dip net, so he then gigged the fish and held it by its “wings” while Dave reeled it to the shore.

After the guys pulled the stingray onto the sand, they realized that the fish was pregnant when thousands of her eggs expelled from her underbelly. They hated that she was killed, but with tons of kids on the beach, she was also dangerous.

After 35 minutes of struggling with the fish, the stinger was snipped off and is being held as the top prize in Dave’s fishing collection.
