Library Systems Administrator, Alice Weiss said that there is a computer dedicated to genealogy in the genealogy room which also has wireless service.
She said that the library would like to update its current version of Family Tree Maker softwear and get a scanner for patrons to use in their research.
GACGHS member Kathryn Richard also provided Visiting a Cemetery for Genealogical Research handouts, offering suggestions what to take along, and tips on recording tombstone inscriptions
The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. on September 25.
Guest speaker Jane Bodie, curator of Evergreen Plantation in Wallace will present “Evergreen Plantation and Allied Becnel and Songy Families.”
At 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 24 a special dinner meeting will be held at La Maison Magnolia, 950 First St., Norco. Guest speaker Gerald F. Patout, Head Librarian at the Williams Research Library of the Historic New Orleans Collection will present “Researching the Origin of Creole Cooking: A Culinary People.” Paid reservations are required the cost is $23 per person.
Organized in July 1979, one of the main goals of the Society is to preserve, compile, and publish records of genealogical or historical nature, with emphasis given to the records of St. James, St. Charles and St. John Parishes. Annual membership dues include a subscription to the Society’s quarterly publication, Les Voyageurs.
Elected officers for 2007-2008 year are Gloria Maurin, president, Brian Becnel, vice-president, Linda Madere, secretary and Mary Duhe, treasurer. The GACHGS meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month, at the main branch of the St. John Library on Highway 51. The public is welcome. For more information visit www.gachgs.com.
