Football giant Ed Reed comes HOME for charity golf tourney
All-pro safety Ed Reed announces a new golf tournament to benefit the "Eye of the Hurricane Foundation"
In the Destrehan High field house adjacent to the football stadium, Reed announced that he would hold the golf tournament on July 2 in conjunction with Valero Refinery to benefit the Ed Reed “Eye of the Hurricane Foundation.”
Valero Refinery of St. Charles is sponsoring and organizing the event, which will take place at the Belle Terre Country Club.
Reggie Wayne of the Indianapolis Colts and Bubba Franks of the Green Bay packers are scheduled to attend the golf classic, Reed said, and he’s hoping to secure a few more big named athletes before tee-time in July.
“It’s all for the kids,” Reed said at a press conference for the upcoming event. “We try to benefit underprivileged kids in nay city possible that we can help with really. Mainly it’s been in St. Charles and in Baltimore.”
Reed is no stranger to giving back, as his foundation started shortly after his pro-career did in 2002. Over the past five years, Reed has used the foundation to help fund such events as an annual summer football camp, Wal-Mart shopping sprees for needy children during Christmas time, thanksgiving baskets donated to needy families and a college scholarship Destrehan High Students are eligible for.
While he certainly hasn’t forgotten home, Reed also helps contribute to his adopted football home in Baltimore where he’s helped fund several projects at Booker T. Washington middle school and takes kids each week to see the Baltimore Ravens play during the NFL season.
Besides the golf tournament, Reed is putting together a bike-a-thon fundraiser with Lance Armstrong. He’s also working on getting a recreational park for kids in the St. Rose area.
He says it’s simply in his nature to help others.
“It’s definitely in my heart and in my soul to keep giving as much as possible,” reed said. “I try my best to continue to be myself and being me is that - giving to kids and helping others.”
Anyone interested in registering a team for the tournament should contact Cherie Accardo at 985 764-4738. Fees are $125 per person or $500 per foursome.
