Arc of St. Charles expands Career Exploration Camp for more work opportunities
The Arc of St. Charles is hosting its second annual Upstart Camp to give teens with disabilities an opportunity to explore their career interests.

Twelve teenagers are participating in this year’s career exploration camp July 17 - 28.

Upstart Camp has expanded into two phases in its second year. Teens in the first phase will participate in career exploration tours, while teens in the second phase will job shadow at businesses in St. Charles Parish. Funding for this camp is provided from community grants.

In week one of Upstart Camp, the teens will go through orientation and learn about The Arc of St. Charles Vocational Program, visit Delgado Community College’s Disability Services department, visit Nicholls State University to learn about their Bridges to Independence program, tour the State Capitol, and participate in a program on dressing for success and interview skills presented by the St. Charles Parish Department of Community Services. In week two of the camp, the teens in phase one will participate in career opportunities tours at the St. Charles Parish Courthouse, Majoria’s Supermarket, St. Charles Parish Library, and First American Bank. The campers in the second phase will be job shadowing at The Basketry, St. Charles Parish Department of Parks and Recreation, and Frank’s Supermarket.

“In our second year of Upstart Camp, we can provide teenagers with disabilities more opportunities to explore their career interests,” said Kelsey Pollock, Community Relations and Media Specialist of the Arc of St. Charles. “We’re excited about the partnerships in our community, and for the businesses in St. Charles Parish who support employment for people with disabilities.”
