On Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007, at the Valero St. Charles Refinery gym, cancer survivors from St. Charles Parish were honored at the first Pre-Event Relay for Life cancer survivors celebration. Mrs. Eula Champagne and Mrs. Joanne Walker both spoke and gave their cancer survivors testimonials.

The weather was rainy outside, but survivors still came out to celebrate with the American Cancer Society. Relay for Life is a celebration of survivorship. They enjoyed music from the St. Charles parish Community Choir and the Dancing Grannies and good food from Tod’s Catering. Valero St. Charles Refinery and Chemtura sponsored the evening’s festivities.

Relay for Life is an overnight fund-raising event filled with activities, fun and community spirit. All funds raised at Relay for Life support American Cancer Society programs designed to reduce cancer incidence and mortality through research, education, advocacy and patient services.

The impact of cancer is clear. More than 9 million cancer survivors are living today. Additionally, more than 1,500 people will die of cancer each day.

The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in St. Charles parish will be held on Saturday, March 24 at the West Bank Bridge Park in Luling. For more information about participating in Relay for Life, contact Theresa Theriot, 2007 Relay for Life Chair, at 783-5090 or the American Cancer Society at 851-7776 or visit them on the web at www.cancer.org.

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy and service.
