This week's Off to College and Beyond Player of the Week is UNO shortstop and DHS grad Tyrone Wethers who was 2 for 6 with 4 runs scored, an RBI and a hit by pitch in the Privateers' home opener victory over Southern last Tuesday. He was also 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored, an RBI and 2 walks in the teams' victory over New Mexico State on Saturday. And on Sunday, he was 1 for 4 with a run scored and a walk in the Privateers' loss to New Mexico State.
Eugene leads Golden Eagles in win
Southern Miss guard and DHS grad Amber Eugene led the Lady Golden Eagles with 18 points to go along with 8 rebounds, 2 steals and an assist in the team's victory over Alabama-Birmingham on Saturday. She also had 16 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds and 2 steals in the team's victory over Memphis last Thursday.
Stewart leading Xavier
Xavier guard and DHS grad Mark Stewart led the Gold Rush with 22 points while grabbing 5 rebounds and 3 steals in the team's victory over Belhaven on Saturday. Last Thursday, he led the team with 19 points to go along with 2 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal in their loss to LSU-Shreveport. He also had 16 points to go along with 2 assists and a block in the team's victory over SUNO last Monday.
Strickland cracks doubledigits
Loyola forward and HHS grad McArthur Strickland had 11 points, 8 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 assists in the Wolfpack's victory over Belhaven last Thursday. He also had 8 points, 5 rebounds and a steal in the team's loss to LSU-Shreveport last Monday. And on Saturday, he had 8 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals in the team's loss to Mobile.
Baseball Notes
LSU pitcher and Destrehan native Michael Bonura pitched a perfect inning and a third, striking out one in the Tigers' loss to Stetson on Friday. SLU catcher and HHS grad Andrew Hickman was 1 for 3 with a walk and a run scored in three games for the Lions' this past week. Tulane outfielder and DHS grad Rustin Rebowe was 0 for 2 in 2 games for the Green Wave this past week.
Basketball Notes
Mississippi College guard and DHS grad Jaszmine Eugene had 4 points and 2 rebounds in 2 games for the Choctaws this past week. Samford guard and DHS grad Trey Montgomery had 4 points, 2 rebounds and an assist in 2 games this past week for the Bulldogs. Copiah-Lincoln guard and HHS grad Whitney Scott had 5 steals in the Lady Wolves' victory over Gulf Coast Community College last Thursday.

Superintendent steps down to get down - 720 views
Dr. Rodney Lafon boiled down his decision to announce his retirement last month to a simple factor. With 40 years accumulated in the school system he had come to a point in his career where he would make nearly the same yearly salary as a retiree as if he chose to continue working.
