Dallas Veillon has been found guilty of negligent homicide in the August 2013 four-vehicle wreck that killed St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Deputy Jeff Watson.

Veillon’s blood-alcohol level was over the the legal limit at the time of the crash, which occurred on Paul Maillard Road in Luling on Aug. 4, 2013. Watson was responding to a fellow officer’s request for assistance.

Watson was traveling an estimated 90 miles an hour in a 35 mile-per-hour zone when he struck Veillon’s truck in the rear as it was making a left onto Post Street, according to the traffic incident report.

Watson’s car careened into oncoming traffic and crashed into an SUV driven by Arthur Tregre. Tregre’s vehicle was pushed back 33 feet before coming to a stop. The deputy was fatally injured in the accident and Tregre suffered critical injuries including a broken leg, ankle, sternum and pelvis as well as a bruised lung and severe blood loss.

Although Veillon had a blood alcohol level of 0.1 at the time of the accident, which is over the legal limit of 0.08, the State Police report did not find the alcohol in his system to be a factor in the crash.

Veillon and a motorcyclist, who jumped off his bike to avoid the accident, suffered minor injuries.

Veillon is scheduled for sentencing on Nov. 23. He faces up to five years in prison.
